David Lynch read the book. These innovations were made because Lynch felt it would be better this way. Frank Herbert was also there while filming the movie, so it's wrong to say this version is worse than the original. Mini series were 99.9% based on the book but look what happened: bad acting, stupid costumes and phrases, Herbert even wasn't there to approve the series.

Right you are. Herbert loved the Lynch version. An ever inconvenient fact for the would-be defenders of the novels. What they miss and Herbert understood, is that Lynch captured the spirit of the novel, which is all that matters. The people who love the new series are fanboys obsessed with irrelevant technical details and minor characters...and that newer version has no clue what the books were even about.

I couldn't agree more. Growing up I was always sick of the supposed fans of the book who had written off the movie as being superficial. Watching this movie as a child made me want to read the book.

i saw the movie before i read the first dune novel. i really like the film and the book. i htought david lynch did a good job of capturing the essence of the novel. plus its got a kickass soundtrack

I saw the movie a looong long time ago (I still have it on VHS!!). I remembered enjoying it even though I didn't understand everything--I was about 10 last time I watched it from start to finish. I just finished the book yesterday. I don't get what the haters are fussing about! Great book, great movie!

Agree completely. Particulary with the Mini-guns, pure bad-ass. Such a shame there wasn't more scenes like this in the movie, the spirtual side of the Fremen and the desert didn't really appeal to me in the book or the movie.

Will Universal/Dino De Laurentiis ever show the full material originally filmed? There are a lot missing scenes, among others:
- Shadout Mapes giving the crysknife to lady Jessica.
- Jamis and Paul death fight.
- Paul watching the fremen obtaining Water of Life by drowning a baby worn.
- Mutated Navigator of the Space Guild telling Emperor Padishah that Atreides must not leave Arrakis especially Paul.
Maybe when the new adaptation arrives. Some are available on internet (God bless YOUTUBE!)

The Fremen can simply run away using their deep-trained arrhythmic striding-pace that the worms don't notice. So the worms might arrive on the scene, but they will ignore Fremen departing only a hundred metres away from them when they erupt from the desert.
