On a serious note, its because Americans are not taught Geography in school as a basic subject. In Europe it is a standard subject from a very early age. I was colouring world maps and learning capitals at age eight. Do not blame her for the inadequacies of the American school system

This question was not what she expected. And she's unable to think on her feet. This failure is hers personally, not that of the American School System.
