Hi Fivegurl, I'm a population sociologist. Please let people know about this film. Australians need to be educated about the system that is making life so hard for us here and so impossible for our wildlife. We are becoming a terribly cruel society because of economic/population growth. We don't have to have it.

You have nailed the problem not only in Australia but world-wide. The top 5% own 95%.
What's really frightening about the world wide population statistics is the apparent "rush to the bottom" that all governments are endorsing. Our seemingly invincible economic system is completely oil-driven. What happens when it runs low, never mind out?

Well said, and I agree with commiescum88 that this not only represents the situation in Australia, but in most other countries as well. The film looked crappy and hard to read at times, but the message was great.

I reckon the opposite I think Australia should have more people as more than 80% of Australians live on less then 1% of the australian landmass. Australia could support heaps of people we produce nearly as much wheat as the United States or maybe half of what they produce so thats 150 million people.

To aussie2142: Yes, I agree. Austalia is a huge land mass, why couldn't it easily be made to hold 150 million or lots more people? Landless peasants have to work coal mines? What utter rubbish. World population is growing, and so old ways may not be quite adequate anymore. People need cheap energy/electricity in growing cities built to hold so many people. Most people don't want to live off land, but diversity of modern jobs like working oil rigs. Build more coal, nuclear, whatever plants.

To atlibent: I seriously doubt that people could possibly so much hate overcrowded cities. Oh really? Then why doesn't everybody just leave and go elsewhere? Apparently they like it in the big city, or they are finding some benefit(s). I actually am a possible proponent of high-density human housing, but not for same reason as enviro-wackos. I don't advocate high density to keep people out of nature/wilderness, but along with denser populated nations to help the planet hold lots more people.

To tomterahedrob: Why fight the developers? Rising population is great for the economy and jobs and stuff. Sell your land to the developers, cash out of the economy and enjoy your early retirement. I advocate natural urban sprawl, because so many people want their beautiful, cute, adorable, precious babies, and the planet isn't getting any bigger. By building additional cities and towns and suburbs on top of suburbs, we can long find or make place for everybody and all their progeny. =Sprawl

To InternetRevolution: I am not "sick," I am caring and altruistic. I know people have very good compelling reasons to have as many children as they do, and I want for them to benefit, and for the human race to go on naturally ENLARGING for the greater good of the many. Nature wants humans to grow more numerous, and for people to reproduce without "precautions" to "control" our natural fertility. Bigger/denser and more cities, are a far better usage of land, than huge, neglected forests.

I don't see the problems behind big cities? Of course I see some potential problems of big cities, especially when stupid politicians mismanage them. But wake up and face the reality. We are in a modern populous age of "huge" human populations, so many people needing some place to live. Cities function in my view, something like a mild population arcology Don't you see the problems of disparaging human life, and of shoddy experimental contraceptives? There's many great reasons for human growth!
