Hmmm... Perhaps it's "bromide" as in a photographic print made on a paper that use silver bromide as the light sensitive chemical. Photography was a common way to make copies of documents, artwork, drawings and so on, and bromide paper was a common medium for prints of these. If so, I would guess that a bromide when applied to a person is someone with a common personality, someone that does not think for themselves but just does like "everyone" else.
