It's a fushion of Goth and Punk, it's pretty new so it's not as rampant as Goth and Punk as individual forms of music. There are only a few bands who actually practice this type of music such as hurts, Cuartet, juliadoll, but most of them are underground bands so popularity is only amongst those who have actually heard and circulate their music amongst avid listeners. I think the US counterparts of a goth punk band are My Chemical Romance, Naught Zombies.

I've done a bit of research, and you're actually wrong. It came out a while back with late 70's punk bands who started dressing more goth. MCR is by no means punk in any form. They're just wanna be mainstream crap. and this isn't metal either. Try In Flames, Soilwork, or Living Sacrifice.
