Something my wife said 5 minutes ago reminded me of this song and I jsut started singing it automatically, the lyrics were just right there straight away, out of nowhere from the depths of my tiny mind. I haven't heard the song for years (wow the brain's a tremendous thing). She asked me what it was I was singing and I came straight on here and found this vid...she liked the song. And I still love it too. The magic of youtube...it's better than real life.

I too have loved this song since I first heard it back in the 70s. I still have the vinyl album, but my turntable no longer works, so I thought - GO TO YOUTUBE! When you listen to this song, it makes you wonder: what in God's name happened to music in the last 25 years? True, every generation loves their music, but can anyone today write lyrics like these? How many can play classical guitar like this?

No, we're not doing very well Lambonrye. Life was so much simpler when this song was released even though it was only 30 years ago. We're spiraling towards the gates of Hell right now, that are opening as we speak. Sorry to be so morbid. Don't look at my saved vids;-)

This song conjures up images of rows of red brick English houses with TV ariels on the roofs and people inside bemoaning that there is too much violence on TV these days :-) A wonderful track, takes me back to my late teens. Wind and Wuthering was to be Genesis' last great album.

Steve Hackett was such an important part of this group. His loss was the reason for them ditching the Prog Rock and going commercial. Without Steve Hackett and Tony Banks this is a top 40 group.

Tony Banks never quit Genesis. But as Rutherford and Collins favored more commercial direction, Banks also shifted. But it's true that Steve Hackett had the strongest prog identity in this band. In 1979 Hackett made a great prog album "Spectral Mornings" whereas Banks made a terrible prog album "A Curious Feeling". What I like about this song is that unlike most of "Wind", "Rooftops" is sincere. Really moving and evocative. Too bad the band left out "Inside Out" and put instrumentals on W W.

life was not simpler. look at the political turmoil this song expresses. We were considerably more informed and empathic to the problems. Obviously, anyone listening this has not succumbed, but many have to the low brow hyper violence that is entertainment now. Saudade my friends.

This is such an absolutely wonderful song! Yet, I have never been sure what to make of the lyrics. An elderly couple watching TV. Is it decrying the mental numbness of watching war and violence on the news mixed with quiz shows and TV soaps. Or is an ode to the simple life of living in a sheltered world where we have the luxury of actually "switching off" from the harsh realities of the modern world and where TV becomes a handy escape route. Bit of both I guess that's what makes it great!
