IEEE Spectrum http://spectrum.ieee.org stopped by Ignite NYC, where Bre Pettis and the NYC Resistor hacker collective hosted a contest to see who had the fastest soldering iron in the city. The contestants all raced to build a TV-B-Gone kit http://www.makershed.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=MKAD4, and the first to turn off the TV won.

Yeah it worked. The rules were, the first to build the kit, and have it actually turn off the TV would be the winner. In the vid you can see the TV go off.

I used to enjoy making all my solder into different sized solder balls and spiky shapes and stuff. My dad was in the army, so I suppose he was a solder too.

i think he just left the entire lead on the led's on. then cut the excess off after he's all done.
much easier than cutting the leads to length before soldering them onto the board.

the point is that 'ph' exists because 'something' happened.. historically, socially, whatever (any of the ways that language develops).
there may be such a reason why 'solder' is pronounced differently, but mikeselectric's point is that, if there isn't such a reason, and the 'L' is just being dropped, then it's sloppy—like friends of mine who just say '1, 2, free', because they never paid attention. so, "it's said that way beca
