Nibs2lou, thanks ... ( 4 weeks ago by written12)
Nibs2lou, thanks for that great description of the gig you saw. Even in an era of exotic and intense groups, there really was something especially weird and possessed about Beefheart. By the way, was Middle Earth one of the venues that Pink Floyd regularly appeared?

Thanks. Floyd were more at UFO Club. At Middle Earth in 1968 I saw Byrds (adored, eight encores, badly wrecked Gram Parsons, Jagger and McCartney in audience); Doors (patchy, drunken Jimbo laughed at by hip Londoners); Airplane (magnificent Grace, every syllable audible over band's scary roar); first London gig by 4th on bill Led Zep (nobody listened). Dangerously gifted artistes on the edge, bad acid, redneck attacks, fear all around. But Beefheart's Electricity took them ALL off at the knees.

This is awesome! You can hear the influence Don and the magic band had on the likes of Jesus Lizard and the White Stripes! True genius...and 30 years ahead of it's time...

There is no cure that I know of. Once Beefheart gets into you, just accept it. You won't forget it. You'll never regret it.

No. Wasn't a Zappa fan. Saw him once only at the posh London Festival Hall, a few weeks before I saw the Captain in '68. Felt Zappa was putting on a self-regarding act for the art set. Beefheart was deep underground with the freaks. There was a scary vibe about The Magic Band - the same feeling you got with the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie - that everybody involved were pushing their art into dangerously unknown territory. Very, very few people had that sort of balls, even then.

Love Beefheart, but personally, I prefer some of his later bands to the Magic Band. Still, way ahead of it's time. There used to ba a great club here in Knoxville, Tennessee called Ella Gurus, named for the Beefheart song. Saw some great acts there, including Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Hot Tuna, and Doc Watson!
