Our wedding, shot on Super 8mm Kodak cinefilm in 1974, Home brew telecine capture on PC, using modified Elmo super 8mm projector with enlarged gate to reveal 20% more picture. Shutter and original lens removed, replaced with 25mm Bolex camera lens + IR filter and Creative Live Ultra CCD webcam USB 2.0 [bit noisy!], Controllable light source - White LumiLed, Mouse switched by projector for frame by frame capture at 9fps. Post correction - Premiere Pro + Cineon plugin.
Still in Love after 33 years.

Hi, What kind of infrared filter you used? My transfers seems to be too bright, I think it is because I don't use an Ir filter.

Your video is slightly sepia, this is the effect you get when not using an I/R filter. My filter was obtained from an old webcam, part of the lens assembly. It can be difficult to remove the blue/red crystal like substance as it is easily smashed. The blue cyan glass type filter in camcorders and still ccd camera's do result in loss of light, I have not found these to be satisfactory.

Best Ive seen, I had a look at an Elmo set up before, it has a pulse microswitch on the film guide which you use to send a left click signal to the PC. What can you tell us about the lens set up please? Are you filming into the lens?

The projector is an Elmo SP-F, very basic. I have added electronics i.e. Opto-coupler mouse switching control, 12V motor, toothed belt and pulleys [ex video recorder] PWM motor control and Lumiled light source control circuits. Film path as follows - Webcam
IR/UV filter
lens
film gate
Light LED.

This beats almost all amateur dv stuff out there in terms of quality, shame theres a general consensus that film is somehow inferior/outdated compared to dv. because its the opposite in terms of quality, film is organic and thats its strength. weird to think about where that time has gone. does it exist anymore? Is that all we become in the end? I was looking at photographs the other day and I think its really quite sad. Eventually we will only exist as photographs, like captured ghosts.

No, I don't think the consensus is that film is inferior/outdated. For the most part I believe film is still looked at at being beautiful and very hard to beat with any digital format. But for low-budgeters it comes down to expense. If film was looked at being inferior why is everyone wanting their video footage to look more "film-like"?

great vid, your wife looks beautiful and you both look happy. amazing quality of image. How did you store it? How would you say you got your image to be so clear and sharp compared some other super 8 stuf fout there? Do you think your film-digital transfer is better than labs?

Click "more info" on how I did it![right hand side of the clip] Frame by frame achieved using a program called Cinecap. Video editing - Adobe premiere pro, this sharpened the video for utube and was saved as a .wmv file on PC. I have tried to achieve similar results to Rank Cintel.

Well perhaps its a generalisation on my behalf but that is what I perceive it to be. As for everyone wanting their footage to look more like film, well I suppose it comes down to the expensive production levels lighting etc. dont get me wrong I personally think that film is inherently beautiful.
